Question 1

Is this the same thing as Martha Stewart acrylic paint? Martha Stewart's says it's "by Plaid Inc" and these are also. If so, why the $15+ price diff?

That is an interesting question; Apple Barrel has been around for many more years than Martha Stewart. They are not the same paints.  I have not tried Martha Stewart but will say this I prefer Folk Art or Americana to Apple Barrel as it takes less coats to cover; Apple Barrel is slightly thinner.  I have also painted with Dick Blicks student acrylic and love the blockout white as it is good for mistakes.  It covers mistakes very well as it is thicker than most.  The best paint that I have ever seen to cover furniture is expensive but worth it as it is self leveling and hardens to smooth hard coat after 5 days and it is blackberry house.  In terms of whether Martha Stewart is worth the price-buy one color in that brand, one in Americana, once in folk art and one in apple barrel and judge for yourself. However, avoid red as your test paint as red is the hardest paint to get full coverage with (with exception of the Blackberry House paints).  You also can get large cheap acrylics that is good for painting canvas rugs by going to Home Depot and getting their sample of paints that is mixed up for you to test in roughly 8 ounce or 12 ounce containers.

It odes not tell you in the description how many bottles come in this pacakge and if the colors are random or if you get a specific set of colors when

It tells you everything you need to know, 18 bottles all different, all listed.  I use Apple Barrel all the time.  At $1.00 each in this set is not a bad price at all.  Almost all internet/mail order cost $1.00 a bottle (inc. Plaid).  Walmart is .50 cents per bottle, in the store, but all stores don't carry all the colors. I know 'cause I have them all.  As for quality, I've sold a good number of paintings using just Apple Barrel paints so that should say something.

Question 3

Can these be used to paint rocks for a garden?  I assume you need to use a sealer so the paint doesn't wash off?

Definitely a good sealer. Spray on a couple of coats of a quality waterproof & UV resistant sealer.  Wash and reseal each year and who knows how long they will last!

Question 4

Can these be used for painting fabric?

Accepted Answer

You can add a fabric medium to the paint and then use it on fabrics. Just iron and wash and you're good to go!
