What size battery do they take? how many?

It takes 3 AAs, not 2. And they lasted me less than a week of ~5 hour/day usage. So stock up on batteries if you're buying these.

what is the average battery life if you leave them on constantly?

Installed 3 new Energizer Max batteries on 23rd November, and have run them for 15 days straight, for around 6 hours per day (total ~90 hours), and they are now very dim. They're still on, but I think they will need new batteries imminently.
